FAQ

  • 1. What kinds of concerns do you help people with?

We work with adolescents and adults navigating a wide range of challenges — from anxiety, depression, ADHD, and OCD to stress, trauma, fertility issues, and chronic illness. Many of our clients are also exploring identity, relationships, spirituality, and career transitions. Whether you’re going through a big life change or simply want to feel more grounded day-to-day, therapy can help.

  • 2. How do I know if therapy is right for me?

You don’t need to be in crisis to benefit from therapy. Many people come to gain clarity, improve relationships, or build healthier coping strategies. If you’ve been feeling stuck, overwhelmed, or just ready to make a change, therapy can provide a supportive space to explore what’s happening and create a path forward.

  • 3. What should I expect in my first session?

First therapy sessions often involve lots of questions about what’s bringing you in, what you’d like to change, and how your symptoms have impacted your life. We also often discuss your history, including your family, past experiences of treatment, and past experiences that may impact what is happening in the present. We’ll talk about your goals, answer your questions, and begin to create a personalized plan.

  • 4. How often will we meet, and for how long?

Most clients meet weekly or every other week for 50 minutes. Some people work with us for a few months around a specific challenge, while others decide that therapy provides an important source of support and structure in working towards important life goals, and opt into long-term care.

  • 5. Do you offer in-person or virtual sessions?

Yes. We offer in-person sessions at our Boston office and secure online sessions for clients anywhere in Massachusetts. It is important to note that even for our virtual sessions, clients must be located in MA to be eligible for insurance coverage.

  • 6. Is therapy confidential?

Yes. The laws protecting client confidentiality within the context of mental health treatment are very strict, and we have many measures in place to ensure all of our client’s personal information is secure. We are not allowed to disclose to anyone whether or not we know you or provide any information about who you are. There are very rare exceptions to this, outlined in law, which we go over with all clients at the very start of therapy.

  • 7. What therapeutic approaches do you use?

Our clinicians are trained in evidence-based treatments (EBTs) that research shows are effective in reducing symptoms and improving function. These include Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Internal Family Systems (IFS), and Mindfulness-Based interventions. We will work with you at the start of therapy to identify research indicated treatments based on your symptoms, as well as tailor our approach to your values and preferences.

  • 8. Do you accept insurance?

We Bluecross Blue Shield,  Aetna and Tufts health insurance plans. If we’re not in-network with your plan, we can provide a “superbill” to submit for potential reimbursement through out of network benefits.

  • 9. What are your fees?

Our standard private pay fee is $250 per session of individual therapy, $275 per session of couples therapy

  • 10. What is your cancellation policy?

We ask for at least 48 hour notice if you need to cancel or reschedule. This is because it is very hard to fill slots on short notice, and we want to balance our care of clients with the care of our staff. Sessions canceled late or missed without notice may be billed at the full fee.

  • 11. What if I’ve tried therapy before and it didn’t help?

While some folks have great past experiences with therapy, it’s not uncommon that people come to us reporting negative, or unhelpful past experiences too. Like all kinds of medical care, it is unfortunately common. Many factors can contribute to negative experiences of care, including misdiagnosis, poor fit between a provider and client, or structural factors. Research indicates that one of the most important factors in effective therapy is the client feeling that the clinician understands their life and areas of concern. At May Psychology, we focus on making sure that we take the time to thoroughly understand what matters to you most, what is causing the most disruption in your life, and what kinds of change would be most impactful for you.

  • 12. How do I schedule an appointment?

You can book directly online or email us to get started. We also offer brief phone or video consultations if you’d like to talk first to a provider first and see whether we’re the right fit.
